Abstract
In recent years there has been more robots sold than ever before. However, the success of robots is not about sale, it is about innovation. Two of the key innovations that bring human agility, performance and efficiency to advanced robotic systems are ‘intelligent control’ and ‘compliant actuation’. In this presentation, I will review our recent attempt to develop novel optimal control and compliant actuator design paradigms to realize next generation robotic systems. These tools enable us to surpass some of the technical limitations commonly faced by robots today across different industries in real-world applications.

About the Speaker
David Braun is an Assistant Professor with the Engineering Product Development Pillar at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). He received a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Vanderbilt University, USA. Before joining SUTD, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Edinburgh, and a visiting researcher at the German Aerospace Center. David is the founder and director of the Dynamics & Control Laboratory at SUTD. With research interest spanning fundamental aspects of robot dynamics, control and design, his work is in the emerging field of compliant robotics where his goal is to achieve the robustness, efficiency, agility and dexterity similar to that of humans. He has received the 2013 IEEE Transactions on Robotics Best Paper Award and was an Editor of IEEE’s International Conference on Rehabilitation Robotics (ICORR 2015)
