17 May 2013

In addition to welcoming 283 second intake of students who officially began classes on 13 May, the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) announced the graduating of three of its pioneer MIT-SUTD Dual Masters students today. This two-year full-time programme, a joint collaboration with MIT launched in November 2010, leads to a degree from MIT and another from SUTD.

SUTD presented the graduation certificates to two Singaporeans, Mr Karthikeyan Rajasekharan and Ms Teo Yi Linn, and an American, Mr Nikhil Jain, who started their Masters programme in 2011.

Karthikeyan graduated with :

  • a Master of Science in Engineering and Management (System Design & Management Programme) at MIT and a Master of Engineering in Information Systems Technology & Design (Research) at SUTD;

Yi Linn graduated with :

  • a Master of Engineering in Logistics (Supply Chain Management Programme) at MIT and a Master of Engineering in Engineering Systems & Design (Research) at SUTD, and

Nikhil graduated with :

  • a Master of Engineering in Manufacturing at MIT and a Master of Engineering in Engineering Systems & Design (Research) at SUTD.

SUTD President Professor Thomas Magnanti said: “We are extremely proud to celebrate the first graduation of SUTD’s students. In this Dual Masters programme, with a year of coursework at MIT and a year of research at SUTD, students receive a truly dual and international experience with the opportunity to immediately apply their newly acquired knowledge to solve real world problems.”

According to Masters student Karthikeyan, who is now working at Google as an enterprise cloud platform sales engineer: “The experience was stimulating and enriching as the first Masters at MIT allowed me to learn about systems architecture, data analytics, technology incubation, innovation management and product design, all in one year! While I researched the application of data science to online communities for my second Masters at SUTD. This combination of strong theory gained at MIT and directed research performed at SUTD has equipped me with the right skills to tackle the data analysis challenges of the future.”

The SUTD Commencement and Freshmen Inauguration Ceremony, held at its Dover campus today, was attended by Mr Phillip Ng, Chairman of the SUTD Board of Trustees, Directors from MIT and the Zhejiang University, including guest speaker, CEO of Keppel Corporation, Mr Choo Chiau Beng.
