ASD Distinguished Lecture Series by Christopher Lee

Synopsis
The discursive relation between type and the idea of the city underpins the work of Serie Architects. Such a view presupposes that the architecture that arises out of the lessons drawn from the typical elements of the city resonates with a common familiarity and purpose. This pursuit of an architecture that can act as a common framework is not an attempt to revive an anachronistic image of the past but is in fact a search for the idea that can be commonly held so as to invest architecture with a social, political and cultural relevance. 

Speaker's profile 
Christopher Lee is the co-founder and principal of Serie Architects London, Mumbai, Singapore and Beijing; and leads the design of Serie across all four offices. His research, writings and teaching on the embedded intelligence and cultural values of building types underpins the work of the practice. He is Associate Professor in Practice at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design where he is leading the research on the future of the developmental city. He previously served as the Director of the AA Projective Cities MPhil Programme and AA Diploma Unit Master. Lee graduated with the AA Diploma (Honors) from the AA, received the RIBA President’s Medal Commendation Award, and his Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture and Urbanism from the Berlage Institute and TU Delft.
 
His distinctive and contextual designs has been recognized through many prestigious awards, including the BD Young Architect of the Year Award, Architectural Record Design Vanguard and the Leading European Architects Review’s 10 visionary architects for the new decade. He is currently working on a string of high profile, civic and cultural buildings won through international competition, including the new Singapore State Courts Complex, the new School of Design & Environment, National University of Singapore, HDB’s Punggol Neighbourhood Centre & Polyclinic, Singapore, the Jameel Art Centre, Dubai and the Bayt Al-Fann Jameel, Jeddah.
 
Christopher Lee is the author and editor of Common Frameworks: Rethinking the Developmental City in China, Part 1: Xiamen, The Megaplot, Part 2: Macau, Cross Border City, and Part 3: Taiqian, The Countryside as a City. He is the author of Working in Series and co-authored Typological Formations: Renewable Building Types and the City, both published by AA Publications. He also co-edited Wiley Academy Architectural Design Issue Typological Urbanism: Projective Cities.
