ASD Gradshow 3: metadata

13 Jan 2018 - 27 Jan 2018 9.00 AM to 9.00 PM National Design Centre Singapore 111 Middle Road, Singapore 188969

Through the carefully curated works by our graduates from the Bachelors and Masters of Architecture and Sustainable Design (ASD), the exhibition showcases solutions of the present and future, as well as the varied skills and talents of our students.

About the Show
The theme for this year’s SUTD ASD Graduation Show is 'METADATA', defined as "data of the data". The prefix 'meta' first appeared from Greek, with the meaning “beyond" and "across".

As more people question decisions made by key players in the built environment industry, more effort is needed to express our design processes and thinking. One way to achieve that is to pursue an evidence-based design process. The usage of data to inform architecture has become increasingly pertinent. However, data has to be visualised in order to be well appreciated as well to show patterns, networks and relationships in order to gather a consensus on issues.

Due to the multi-disciplinary curriculum at SUTD ASD, we are poised to take up the challenge to look "beyond" and "across" the ordinary. At this show, we aim to present the graduates’ works in a unique, data-centric manner expressed in space, showcasing various portraits of SUTD ASD.

Featured projects include:

Micro Timber Towers
This project focuses on wood as a material and for the design of micro-towers. Investigating alternative construction methods, it was inspired by the idea of re-inventing wood construction and revitalising a dormant industry sector that has disappeared from urban construction.  Wood, composite materials and hybrid construction systems will be explored to envision new concepts of vertical construction. We aim to unlock the enormous potential of wood for future applications by recording a material and craft with a long history, re-conceptualising it and projecting our recordings into entirely new concepts.

Experiential Learning Community
This project dreams of a school design not governed by the needs of a multi-purpose classroom but rather, the curation of integrated learning experiences. This empowers the learners to take charge of their own learning through more flexible and autonomous exploration. We use a schematic framework of scientific exploration, comprising of discovery, testing and community feedback for young learners to understand the world and to define the learning experiences required in this school design. This system is expected to be future-proof by providing unique experiences that will remain relevant in the face of technology. It inspires sustainability by nurturing a love for life-long learning through cultivating the child-like curiosity into teenage-hood and adulthood.

Bridging the Dichotomy of Nature and Culture
This project aims to develop a new urban housing typology that seeks to diminish the division between urban environment and natural environment, creating a platform to facilitate harmonious coexistence between cities, natural habitats and people. The new housing typology aims to give rise to a new form of urbanism that is not made up of individual isolated impenetrable buildings, but an interconnected porous mesh which dissolves the boundary between the urban environment and natural environment, exterior and interior, public and private.
