Hear from 1997 Physics Nobel Prize winner Professor Claude Cohen-Tannoudji. Using Photons for Manipulating Atoms Understanding the nature of light and its interactions with matter has always been a challenge for Physics. Yet, great strides were made in the last few decades, with the discovery of wave particle duality and new mechanisms for light generation such as lasers. It has also emerged that light is a tool for manipulating atoms, for controlling their polarization, position and velocity. This has opened the way to a wealth of applications like MRI and ultra-precise atomic clocks. Join Professor Cohen-Tannoudji as he discusses how advances in fundamental research can lead to new unexpected applications which transform our daily lives. This lecture is held in conjunction with Global Young Scientists Summit (GYSS) 2019, organised by the National Research Foundation Singapore.
