SUTD is honoured to host the Singapore Linguistics Olympiad (SLingO) 2021. Selected top-performing participants of the SLingO contest will represent Singapore at the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL)

Award Announcement

A total of 284 students representing Singapore participated as a guest at three separate testing sites on April 16. The following table contains the names of the Top 15 students from Singapore.

About the International Linguistics Olympiad
The IOL is one of 13 International Science Olympiads for secondary school students, and has been held annually since 2003. Each year, teams of young linguists from around the world gather and test their minds against the world’s toughest puzzles in language and linguistics. More information on the IOL website.

Eligibility Criteria

No prior knowledge of linguistics or languages is required: even the hardest problems require only your logical ability, patient work, and willingness to think around corners.

  • If you are enrolled at a school:

    • A participant must be enrolled between grade 6 to 12 in his/her school. In other words, only pre-university participants are allowed.

    • A participant must carry an official school photo ID that states his/her name, school name, and current grade (or date of birth).

  • If you are not enrolled at a school:

    • You have to be under the age of 20.

    • A participant must carry a government-issued photo ID (NRIC, FIN, passport, etc.) that states his/her name and date of birth.

  • Participants who are not Singapore Citizens are eligible to participate in the SLingO Contest provided they reside in Singapore and are enrolled at a school in Singapore.

Sample Questions
  • SLingO is accredited by the Asia Pacific Linguistics Olympiad (APLO). The participants of SLingO will be evaluated against the problems prepared by APLO.
