With great interest in the FinTech sector, Singapore University of Technology and Design graduate, Joshua Cheong (26), has become the first Singaporean to receive the Singapore Commonwealth Scholarship in Innovation. He will head to Cambridge University’s business school (Cambridge Judge Business School) for his master’s degree next month.

There were three scholarship recipients at this year’s Chevening Scholarship Awards ceremony organised by the British High Commission last evening.

During the interview, Joshua said he was from the pioneer batch of SUTD graduates and studied information systems technology and design.

After graduation, Joshua joined Citibank as a management associate and was exposed to many different types of financial technology research and development; for example, designing a credit card mobile application form, linking a credit card's promotional code to the media network, etc.

In order to gain more experience before he goes abroad for further studies, Joshua joined a start-up fund management company to work on digitising and streamlining the investment process.

Besides receiving the Singapore Commonwealth Scholarship in Innovation to go to Cambridge University to do his master’s in science and technology policy, Joshua also received a scholarship from the Monetary Authority of Singapore.
