Lianhe Zaobao, 5 Jan 2019, 9.5m tall “pig lantern” brings about the Lunar New Year atmosphere to Chinatown (summarised translation)

The Lunar New Year is coming and Chinatown will have 2,138 lantern decorations this year, the highlight of which is the 9.5-meter-tall Year of the Pig lantern.

This year's Lunar New Year lighting event features 2,138 lanterns along Eu Tong Sen Street and New Bridge Road.

About 179 of the lanterns are piglet-shaped, while the centerpiece Year of the Pig lantern is 9.5 meters tall and consists of multiple pigs, coins and purses. Other designs include the traditional New Year decorations such as ingots and firecrackers, all of which require about 20,000 bulbs to light up.

This year's lanterns were designed by 11 students from the Singapore University of Technology and Design. This is the eighth year of collaboration between the preparatory committee and SUTD students. They started preparations in July last year and it took about three months to complete the lantern design.

42 craftsmen from China’s Sichuan Province were responsible for making the lanterns.

The Lunar New Year light-up ceremony will be held on the 20th (Sunday) of this month and all lanterns will be displayed until March 6.
