The Eco-City Research and Innovation Centre established by the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) in the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City recently awarded its first scholarship. The scholarship recipient will begin a four-year undergraduate programme at SUTD and is expected to return to the Eco-City to work or start a business after graduation.

Founded in November last year, the SUTD Eco-City Research and Innovation Centre (SERIC) is the first research and innovation centre set up by a Singaporean higher learning institution in Tianjin. This centre was jointly established by SUTD, China-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City Administrative Committee (ECAC) and Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City Investment and Development Co., Ltd. (SSTEC), with the aim of researching and innovating toward zero-carbon goals and creating solutions for sustainable and low-carbon development.

According to a statement from SSTEC, the inaugural awardee is Wang Minxing, an 18-year-old from the affiliated school of Beijing Normal University in Tianjin Eco-City. He will start his undergraduate studies at SUTD in September this year.

Wang Minxing said, "It is a great honour to be the first recipient of the SERIC Scholarship, and I thank SERIC for providing me with this valuable opportunity. During my study at SUTD, I will work hard to improve myself, apply what I have learned to practice, and contribute not only to the Eco-City, but also towards sustainable development."

The scholarship programme is one of the key initiatives of SERIC in international educational cooperation and talent cultivation. It will be awarded annually, with a maximum of two recipients each year. The scholarship covers the four-year undergraduate study period, and recipients are expected to return to the Eco-City for employment or entrepreneurial ventures after graduation.

Mr Teo Eng Cheong, CEO of SSTEC, stated that the awarding of the first SERIC Scholarship starts a new chapter for China-Singapore educational cooperation and opens a new channel for international educational exchanges. He hopes that more young talents with dreams of technological innovation and green development will participate in this programme.
