Outside the Classroom

At SUTD, activities outside the classroom are just as important. Students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, from Fifth Row clubs and activities, to overseas programmes and exchange, research and internship.

Fifth Row

Fifth Row is time put aside for SUTD students to pursue their interests.  This adds considerably to the learning experience of students by providing opportunities for them to develop their leadership, communication and teamwork skills. Dedicated timeslots are set aside every week in the student timetable for Fifth Row activities, alongside other formal subjects.
Key Fifth Row programmes and activities include:

Overseas Exposure

SUTD believes that in order for our students to better the world, they first must see and experience the world.  Therefore, we have different overseas programmes and activities to ensure that 100% of our students have the opportunity for overseas experience.
Our global programmes offer students varied exposure that ranges from cultural exchanges, design thinking, and even launching a start-up.
1-Term Global Exchange Programme (GEXP)
Spend an exciting Term 6 living and learning in one of our partner universities worldwide.  You will be able to transfer credits earned back to SUTD.
Summer Programmes
We also offer a suite of short-term summer programmes offering different experiences.  Some examples include:

  • Berkeley Summer Sessions
  • CuriousU International Summer School (University of Twente)
  • Design and Technology Experience (DATE) (Zhejiang University)
  • Tokyo-Tech Cross-Border Entrepreneurship Cultivation (CBEB) Program
  • TU Berlin Summer School
  • TU Berlin Value-added Innovation and Enterprise Work (VIEW) Programme

It is mandatory for all SUTD students to participate in at least one internship before they graduate.  With more than 800 internship organisations supporting this effort, students are spoilt for choice when selecting an internship that suits their skills, interest and aspiration.
The 16-week Internship Programme held during the summer vacation each year is a great opportunity for students to apply what they have learnt in the classroom to the real-world and try out the industry and job of their choice.
Internships are also important because employers value work experience of fresh graduates and see the programme as a platform to hire potential candidates.  A quarter of SUTD students get a return offer from their internship companies.
Structured Internship for Master in Architecture
Students in the Architecture and Sustainable Design pillar who take up the Master in Architecture course are required to complete a structured internship programme prior to the start of their Masters course.
These internships are carefully selected to place students in companies and positions that further develop their knowledge in architecture. The 16-week structured internship period falls between September and December each year.

SUTD undergraduates have the opportunity to participate in research projects from day one, with ready access to funding and faculty mentors.
Research opportunities are available through the following programmes:

  • University Research Opportunities Programme (UROP), a Fifth Row activity where undergraduates are given the opportunity to explore their research interest and participate in different phases of standard research activity which include developing research plans, writing proposals, conducting research, analyzing data and presenting research results in oral and written form.
  • SUTD Honours and Research Programme (SHARP), a premier programme for students to pursue a research-oriented pathway.
