Advisory and Updates on COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019):

The Choo-Lim — SUTD Scholarship is established to encourage academic and learning excellence by attracting outstanding talent from local polytechnics to pursue their undergraduate education at SUTD.


The Scholarship is open to Singapore Citizens or Malaysia Citizens who

  • are applying for admission to SUTD’s undergraduate degree programme;
  • possess outstanding local polytechnic diploma qualifications;
  • are active in 5th Row (co-curricular activities) and community involvement;
  • have good moral character and community spirit;
  • have demonstrated financial need (monthly household Per Capita Income of less than S$2,250)


  • The Scholarship is valued at S$15,000 per academic year and is tenable for the normal duration (up to four years) of the respective degree programmes at SUTD, subject to good academic standing and other terms
  • The quantum will be used towards the annual subsidised tuition fees (after Tuition Grant) and other study-related expenses
  • No bond is attached to the Scholarship
  • The recipient must take up the Tuition Grant Scheme (TGS) from the Singapore Government to enjoy subsidised fees
  • Successful recipients may be granted internship and/or career opportunities with Donor's designated companies
  • The Scholarship also covers the hostel fees for the entire duration of the Freshmore year, i.e. 3 terms 


  • The recipient is required to achieve and maintain good academic standing. Academic performance will be reviewed every term.

  • Recipients are required to complete at least 20 hours of service to the University. They may take on the role of student ambassador, or any other similar role, representing SUTD to give publicity talks, to receive guests, etc., as and when called upon to do so.

  • Recipients may not, without the approval of the University, hold concurrently any other scholarships or grants.

  • The scholarship may be withdrawn at any time if, in the opinion of the University, the recipient’s academic progress or conduct is deemed unsatisfactory.

  • If the recipient decides to terminate the scholarship prematurely, SUTD reserves the right to impose a repayment on a case-by-case basis.


  • Application for the scholarship is made at the same time as application for admission to SUTD.

  • Shortlisted applicants will be notified in due course.

  • Scholarships are awarded on the basis of competition among eligible applicants.

  • SUTD reserves the right not to award any scholarship if there are no candidates of sufficient merit. The decision of the selection committee is final. Enquiries or disputes surrounding its decisions will not be entertained.


Mr Choo Chiau Beng, Chairman of NRF Holdings Pte Ltd and a former member of the SUTD Board of Trustees.
A successful corporate leader, Mr Choo was Chief Executive Officer of Keppel Corporation, CEO of Keppel FELS as well as Chairman & CEO of Keppel Offshore & Marine. He was also the former Chairman of M1 Limited.
Mr Choo was awarded the Colombo Plan Scholarship to study Naval Architecture in the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science (First Class Honours) in 1970 and a Master of Science degree in Naval Architecture in 1971. He attended the Programme for Management Development in Harvard Business School in 1982. Mr Choo was conferred Doctor of Civil Law by the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 2009.
Mr Choo was conferred the Public Service Star Award (BBM) in 2004, the Meritorious Service Medal in 2008 and NTUC Medal of Commendation (Gold) Award in 2007.
