A behavioural model for exploration vs exploitation: Theoretical framework and experimental evidence

ESD Research Seminar by Yifan Feng – How do people navigate the exploration-exploitation (EE) trade-off when making repeated choices with unknown rewards? We study this question through the lens of multi-armed bandit problems and introduce a novel behavioural model, Quantal Choice with Adaptive Reduction of Exploration (QCARE).

Sum of squares submodularity

ESD Research Seminar by Georgina Hall – This talk will demonstrate the usefulness of t-sos submodularity through three applications: (i) a new convex approach to submodular regression, involving minimal manual tuning; (ii) a systematic procedure to derive lower bounds on the submodularity ratio in approximate submodular maximisation, and (iii) improved difference-of-submodular decompositions for difference-of-submodular optimisation.

From prevention to treatment: Designing personalised healthcare operations through analytics

ESD Research Seminar by Wang Xiaodong (Frank) – Healthcare extends beyond the clinical setting; it is a complex system where patients navigate interconnected stages of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. In this talk, Frank provides an overview of his research, which examines healthcare systems through the lens of the patient journey.
