His research focuses on creating large language models (LLMs) that are inclusive, trustworthy, and culturally aware. He is a driving force behind SeaLLMs, one of the first open LLMs specialised for Southeast Asian languages, which has attracted significant community attention and adoption, as well as innovative open-source projects like Babel and Auto-Arena.

With over 60 publications at top-tier AI and NLP venues and a strong citation record, Dr Zhang was named among the World’s Top 2% Scientists in 2025, and recognised with the AAAI New Faculty Highlight in 2026.
