In memory of Mr Nels R. Friets, who had served SUTD as a member of the SUTD Finance Committee for 12 years (May 2011 to Nov 2023), fundraising for the Nels R. Friets – SUTD Bursary was started to help support financially needy students on their educational journey.
Nels first came to Singapore in 1985 and became a Permanent Resident in 1989. Over the years, Nels served in boards and committees of various organisations such as the Singapore Tote Board, Singapore Venture Holdings, and Fullerton Fund Management Company. Holding a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics from Yale University, USA, Nels was formerly the Managing Director & Head of Equities (ASEAN) with Citigroup Global Markets, where he oversaw cash, derivatives, equity capital markets, and prime brokerage activities in ASEAN. Before his retirement, he was the Head of Securities and then an Advisor at the Singapore Exchange Limited.
Nels passed away peacefully on 3 May 2025 after a valiant fight, always keeping close to his heart his favoured adage – “Laughter is the best medicine” (Proverbs 11:22). |
