Kewalram Chanrai Group Scholarship for Women

Through the generosity of the Kewalram Chanrai Group, this Scholarship is available to outstanding full-time female undergraduates pursuing the SUTD Honours and Research Programme (SHARP), SUTD-Duke-NUS Special Track, or SUTD Technology Entrepreneurship Programme (STEP) at SUTD.
Eligibility
  • Full-time female students enrolled in their first year of study in one of the following in one of these programmes:
  • Singapore Citizen or International Student
  • Have good academic standing
  • Demonstrated financial need with monthly Per Capita Income of S$2,250 and below
  • Possess leadership potential, creative thinking, passion, entrepreneurial outlook, pioneering spirit, integrity and moral character
  • Active in Fifth Row (co-curricular activities) and community involvement
Benefits of award
  • Singapore Citizen: The Scholarship is valued at S$15,000 per academic year for up to 4 academic years and shall be applied towards the payment of tuition fees and study-related expenses.
  • International Student: The Scholarship is valued at S$30,000 per academic year for up to 4 academic years and shall be applied towards the payment of tuition fees and study-related expenses.
  • There is no bond to be fulfilled towards the donor.
Terms & conditions
  1. The recipient may not, without the approval of the University, hold concurrently any other scholarships or grants.
  2. If the recipient decides to terminate the scholarship prematurely, SUTD reserves the right to impose a repayment on a case-by-case basis.
  3. The recipient is required to achieve and maintain good academic standing. Academic performance will be reviewed every term. The Scholarship may be withdrawn at any time if, in the opinion of SUTD, the recipient’s academic progress or conduct is deemed unsatisfactory.
  4. The recipient must have taken up the Tuition Grant Scheme by the Singapore Government during enrolment. Read more on the Tuition Grant Scheme here.
  5. Recipients are required to complete at least 20 hours of service to the University. They may take on the role of student ambassador, or any other similar role, representing SUTD to give publicity talks, to receive guests, etc., as and when called upon to do so.
Application procedure
  1. Interested incoming students should apply for the Scholarship when applying for admission to SUTD.
  2. Shortlisted applicants will be notified in due course.
  3. Late and incomplete submissions will not be processed.
  4. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of competition among eligible applicants.
  5. SUTD reserves the right not to award any Scholarship if there are no candidates of sufficient merit. The decision of the selection committee is final. Enquiries or disputes surrounding its decisions will not be entertained.

Kewalram Chanrai Group (KCG) has been in business for over 150 years. Initially finding success in India as a textile trader, it soon expanded and by the 1920s, KCG had operations spanning Africa, Asia and South America. By 1960, the Group had diversified into department stores and textile manufacturing in Nigeria and the following three decades saw the foundation of a successful portfolio in Africa, with Afprint, a diversified textile company listed on the Lagos Stock Exchange. The 1980’s saw Olam, an integrated supply chain manager and processor of agricultural products and food ingredients established in Nigeria.

 

The 1990s saw the foundation of Redington IT products and the expansion of the KCG. Olam was listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange in 2005 and is today an STI top 30 company. Redington was listed in India in 2007 and is an IT products leader in many of its markets.

 

Today the KCG is a trusted global brand with several internationally renowned businesses in the automotive, IT, textile, agriculture and waste recycling sectors, and with many philanthropic initiatives, including Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre in Mumbai, under its umbrella.
