Biography
Jeffrey Huang is a Full Professor at the School of Computer and Communication Sciences (IC) and the School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC) at EPFL and the Founding Director of the Media x Design Lab. From 2020 to 2024, he also served as Director of the Institute of Architecture, overseeing 28 research units in architecture and urban design.
He holds a Diploma in Architecture from ETH Zurich and earned his Master’s and Doctoral degrees from Harvard University, where he received the Gerald McCue Medal for academic excellence. He began his academic career as a Researcher at MIT’s Sloan School of Management (Center for Coordination Sciences), where he worked on early models of coordination theory. In 1998, he joined the Harvard Graduate School of Design as Assistant Professor of Architecture and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2001. In 2006, he was appointed Full Professor at EPFL, where he holds joint appointments in architecture and computer science. He has also been a Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University, a Visiting Fellow at Stanford University’s d.school, and a Berkman Fellow and Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University.
From 2014 to 2017, while on leave from EPFL, he served as Founding Head of Pillar (Dean) of Architecture and Sustainable Design at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD).
In collaboration with Muriel Waldvogel, he is the co-founder of Convergeo LLC, an award-winning international strategic design firm. His work explores the intersection of architecture/urbanism, media, and artificial intelligence. He currently leads Blue City, an Innosuisse Flagship Project developing AI-powered urban twins for climate-resilient cities. His recent article, “On GANs, NLPs and Architecture,” received the 2023 ACSA Best Article Award and is the most-viewed publication in the history of the Technology | Architecture + Design (TAD) journal.
