I summarise some of the main lines of my research, emphasising how I am primarily driven by the desire of solving real-world, difficult optimisation problems. This leads me to researching methodological innovations, bringing together contributions in continuous and discrete mathematical optimisation, numerical analysis, and AI/ML, that then sometimes find unexpected applications. My drive towards having a real-world impact also motivates me to lead scientific and applied research projects, as well as to embark (personally, and coordinating others) in the development of sophisticated open-source optimisation software, due to my belief that theoretical contributions are made way more significant when implemented in well-engineered, well-documented, easy-to-use open-source projects.

Speaker’s profile

Antonio Frangioni is Full Professor at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Pisa since 2012, where he has been Associate Professor, Assistant Professor and PhD Student. He studies solution approaches for structured continuous and combinatorial optimisation problems and their real-life application in energy, transportation, and telecommunications. He published 79 journal papers, 22 book chapters, 20 conference proceedings, and edited 2 books. He managed scientific projects worth 14M Euro, has been coordinator of national/international projects worth 597k/239k Euro and of industrial projects worth 245k Euro. He holds one patent. He has been the driving force of open-source projects, among which an ambitious one totalling over 200k/100k lines of C++ code/comments; a significant fraction of these being his.
