The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) has launched the nation’s first undergraduate programme centred on design and artificial intelligence, effectively combining technology and innovation with the humanities and social sciences to create human-centred solutions.

SUTD recently announced that it has fully upgraded its Design and Artificial Intelligence Degree Programme, first introduced in 2020.

The programme integrates design thinking with artificial intelligence, combining cognitive, cultural, and economic perspectives. Through experiential learning and problem-solving, it equips students to tackle complex, open-ended real-world challenges.

Starting this year, students enrolling at SUTD can pursue the upgraded Design and Artificial Intelligence programme. The enhanced curriculum introduces two entirely new interdisciplinary tracks, attracting students with strengths in mathematics and science who are also deeply interested in economics, business, finance, psychology, philosophy, and human–computer interaction within the social sciences.

The Social and Systems Intelligence track combines economics, business, data science, and AI to analyse and model complex social and economic systems. The Human-Centred Intelligence track integrates psychology, philosophy, and human–computer interaction to explore human thinking, decision-making, and behaviour, fostering technology that is empathetic, ethical, and aligned with real human needs.

Additionally, undergraduates are required to complete multiple design studio courses and a final-year capstone project. These projects allow students to apply design and AI methods to solve real-world problems sponsored by industry partners or to develop entrepreneurial initiatives.

Students also have opportunities to participate in exchange programmes in countries such as the United States, Japan, and China, gaining insight into AI applications across different cultural, economic, and regulatory environments.

SUTD President Professor Phoon Kok Kwang said the upgraded programme is a key part of the university’s effort to expand its pool of design and AI innovators—professionals who combine design, AI, and domain expertise to address real-world challenges.
