Datuk Prof. Dr. Danny WONG

Professor Danny Wong Tze Ken is currently Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at University of Malaya. He was Director for the Global Planning and Strategy Centre from 2012-2017, and a former Director for the Institute of China Studies (2014-2017).

As Director of Global Planning and Strategy Centre, he was responsible for UM’s strategic plans and rankings performance. Professor Wong is a Historian by training.

Datuk Ir. (Dr.) A Rahim Hj Hashim

Datuk Ir. (Dr.) A Rahim Hj Hashim was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the Universiti of Malaya on November 1, 2017. He graduated in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom in 1976 and later received an Honorary Doctorate in Engineering from the same university in 2006.

He worked for PETRONAS for 32 years from September 1976 to December 2008 and held some important and key positions. These include as MD/CEO of PETRONAS Penapisan Melaka and Malaysian Refining Company (1991-1998), Vice President of Human Resource Management (1998-2002), Vice President of Gas Business (2002-2006) and Vice President Research and Technology (2006-2008). He was also the Technical Manager (1982 – 1987) and Refinery Manager (1987 – 1988) for PETRONAS Penapisan (Terengganu) Sdn Bhd, the PETRONAS first refinery at Kerteh.

A professional engineer, he sat on the Board of Engineers Malaysia and was Chairman of the Engineering Accreditation Council of Malaysia (2007-2012). He is currently an Advisor of Institute of Materials Malaysia, a Fellow and a Council Member of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, a member of the Board of Engineers National Monitoring Committee, a board member of ICE Petroleum Engineering Sdn. Bhd., a board member of Deleum Berhad (a public listed company) and a Board Member of Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau MyCEB’s (MyCEB).

In October 2016 he was admitted as a William Pitt Fellow by the Pembroke College of Cambridge. He is the Past President of the International Gas Union (2009-2012), the Immediate Past President of the Malaysian Gas Association (2003-2015) and Past President of the Asia Pacific Natural Gas Vehicle Association (2003-2009). He attended the Harvard Advance Management Program in 1997.

Datin PADUKA Ir. Dr. Siti Hamisah Binti Tapsir

Datin Paduka Ir. Dr. Siti Hamisah Tapsir is currently the Director General at the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education Malaysia. She was deeply involved in the development of the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015-2025 (Higher Education) and currently tasked to implement the initiatives outlined in the Blueprint for the public and private higher education institutions. She played the primary role in the establishment of the rating system for private colleges and the liberalisation of private higher education. She also contributed significantly in the formation of several foreign university branch campuses in Malaysia and the enhancement of the public universities’ policies and governance. These strategies were specifically designed and executed towards enhancing the visibility of Malaysian universities in the global arena. Such ranking performance represents the international acknowledgement and recognition of Malaysian universities excellent quality in teaching, research and global engagement.

Datin Paduka also plays a key role in the Ministry’s Redesigning Higher Education initiatives including the Integrated Cumulative Grade Point Average (iCGPA), CEO at Faculty Programme, 2u2i (work based learning) programme, Malaysia Massive Open Online Courses (Malaysia MOOC), and Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL). Datin Paduka Ir. Dr. Siti Hamisah currently monitors the Education 4.0 initiatives including reviewing the challenges and impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution on Malaysian Higher Education ecosystem.

At the professional level, she is a registered Technologist with Malaysia Board of Technologists and a registered engineer under the Board of Engineers Malaysia. Datin Paduka Ir. Dr. Siti Hamisah received an Honorary Doctorate (Doctor of Science) from the University of Southampton in 2016 for her outstanding contributions in the engineering field. She has received numerous education accolades including the Asia HRD Awards 2017 for her contribution to the Malaysian Society by advancing higher education and the Honorary Fellow of ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO) in 2017 for her expertise and experience in advancing the growth of engineering in the ASEAN region.

Renzo TAAL

Renzo Taal is Senior Vice President, ASIA. He is a recognized leader in the European and International business arena. In October 2016 he was nominated by Quote Magazine on the list of CEO’s for 2021 and has been named for the last five years by Management Team as one of most influential young business leaders in the region.

Renzo joined Salesforce in February 2014 to lead growth and success in the Northern European territory. As Senior Vice President Northern Europe of Salesforce, his focus is to enable companies in Northern Europe to innovatively connect digitally with their customers. In 2018, Renzo joined the Salesforce Asia Pacific team and is excited to be working with brands all across Asia to help them drive success and get closer to their customers.

Renzo has 20 years experience in successful business leadership, both in the Netherlands and internationally. Prior to his leadership role within Salesforce, Renzo was Senior Vice President at Philips Lighting. He was responsible for the transformation of the Lighting division, for driving online business and its return to profitability.

Before joining Philips, Renzo was involved within Dell for Global M&A and Sales Operations for the World Wide Public and Large Enterprise division, based out of Austin, Texas. In this role he was a member of the global Dell executive team and was part of many of Dell’s strategic takeovers. Earlier in his career at Dell, Renzo managed the Dell site in Amsterdam and the Dell Services and Marketing business for China, Hong Kong and North Asia. 

Renzo holds a Master of Science in Business Administration from the Erasmus University, Rotterdam School of Management. He studied at Harvard Business School and worked as a strategy consultant for the finance and fast moving consumer goods industry prior to joining Dell.

Hyungju Park

Hyungju Park was born in Buyeo, Korea, and received BS in physics at Seoul National University in 1986, and then received Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of California, in Berkeley 1995. He studied algebraic geometry at the graduate school, gradually moving to computational aspect of algebraic geometry and applications to signal processing.

He was a professor of computational sciences at Korea Institute for Advanced Study (KIAS), a professor of mathematics at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), the president of the National Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Korea, and a distinguished professor of mathematics at Ajou University where is currently the president.

He was named as the Scientist of the Year by the Korean Association of Science Journalists in 2014, and received the DI Mathematician Award from the Korean Mathematical Society in 2016.

He enjoys interacting with the public on the theme of science and education, and has written numerous newspaper columns and books, and appeared in national TVs for the purpose.

Hyungju Park served as the chairman of Organizing Committee of International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) 2014 in Seoul, and is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the International Mathematical Union whose secretariat is based in Berlin, Germany.

Michael Fung

Michael Fung is the Deputy Chief Executive (Industry), Chief Human Resource Officer, and Chief Data Officer at SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG), a statutory agency under the Ministry of Education. He oversees the development of the continuing education and training system in Singapore, through managing funding and contractual partnerships with private training providers, institutes of higher learning, and enterprises. He also oversees the human resource function, and champions the data capabilities, governance, and reporting practices at SSG. He previously led the strategic policy and resource planning functions at SSG and the Singapore Workforce Development Agency.

Michael is an adjunct Senior Fellow at the Singapore University of Technology and Design, and was a Senior Advisor to the Office of the President at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He formerly held the position of Director of Planning and Institutional Research at HKUST, and provided leadership and support for the University's strategic and academic planning, decision-making, resource allocation, and assessment of institutional effectiveness. He also led the University’s participation in international rankings, and was an advisor to several leading international ranking bodies.

He was previously the Director of Strategic Planning and Quality Assurance at the Singapore Management University (SMU), a Deputy Director at the Singapore Ministry of Manpower (MOM), and held various senior positions at the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) and the National Computer Board (NCB) of Singapore. He is the Founding President of the Higher Education Planning in Asia Association, serves on the Carnegie Mellon University Admissions Council, and sits on the board of IP Academy Singapore. He is an alumnus of the University of Southern California and Carnegie Mellon University in the US, and Tsinghua University in China.

Guy Perring

Guy Perring is Business Development Director, Asia Pacific for Tribal Group who offer market-leading student information systems; a broad, quality-focused range of education services; and industry-standard analysis and benchmarking solutions. Guy leads on their consultancy service, delivering comparative insights for the education sector specializing in improving the student experience and assisting institutions in ensuring their students are achieving their objectives in employment and citizenship.

He has worked in education for over 25 years in a variety of roles from teacher to administrator, market researcher to consultant. He previously worked at the British Council for 12 years in a variety of roles. He has presented at a number of international conferences including Going Global, QS-Apple, APAIE and the Commonwealth of Education Ministers. He is an alumnus of the University of Durham and Manchester University.

Alexandros PAPASPYRIDIS

Dr. Alexandros Papaspyridis is the Tertiary Education Industry Director for the Asia region of Microsoft, which covers India, Greater China Region, Asia Pacific, Australia and Japan.

His focus is the Digital Transformation of Higher Education for the generations of students to be able to lead in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Dr. Papaspyridis holds a PhD in Electronics Engineering, a Master’s in Management and a Bachelor’s in electrical engineering from Imperial College in London. He has been with Microsoft since 2008 holding various positions in business development and sales across Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East & Africa and in Asia Pacific Japan. Prior to Microsoft he has worked in Information Technology and telecom companies and has founded two startups.

He is a member of the Industrial Liaison Boards at the Dept of Computing and Dept of Electrical Engineering at Imperial College and he is conducting research on innovation ecosystems where he has co-authored two articles and a book chapter.

Cynthia Mak

Cynthia Mak has worked in educational and professional publishing for over 17 years. Her work in business development and marketing has included extensive experience working with government agencies, institutions and non-profit associations throughout SEA and China in the development and deployment of digital learning to improve learning outcomes and engage students. Cynthia is an enterprising individual that’s focused on customer and partner success.

Alison Lloyd

Alison Lloyd is Director of International Affairs and Director of Institutional Research and Planning at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. In her capacity as Director of International Affairs, Alison oversees all activity including the strategic development and coordination of international partnerships, international recruitment, mobility opportunities, and institutional relations.

As Director of Institutional Research and Planning, she leads a unit that is responsible for institutional research, strategic planning, performance monitoring, business intelligence, and analytics. In addition, she oversees the University’s participation in international rankings. Alison has a keen interest in using data to support evidence-based decision-making and continuous improvement.

She was previously Associate Dean (External Relations and Development) of the Faculty of Business at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She led internationalisation, branding and marketing of all programmes, student development and alumni relations. The Faculty of Business is one of the largest business schools in the Asian region. During her tenure as Associate Dean, she spearheaded a number of international strategic alliances. She is an award-winning educator at the University and her research interests lie in branding, retailing, and services marketing. Her work has been published in notable academic publications including Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Services Marketing, Tourism Management and others.

Prior to joining The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Alison worked as a Management Consultant with Deloitte and later moved on to being Principal Consultant in a business consulting firm in Hong Kong. Her consulting engagements span strategy consulting, business process review and improvement, design and implementation of corporate performance management frameworks and change management for both private and public sector organizations in Hong Kong and Asia.

Laura TUCKER

As the CEO of Vertigo Ventures, Laura leads the strategy and growth of the company. Laura founded Vertigo Ventures in 2009 and led the development of the company’s flagship product, VV-Impact Tracker, which is being used across the UK, Australia and Hong Kong by research institutions, across disciplines, to identify, capture and report the impact of their research.

At Vertigo Ventures, Laura drives the company’s vision to embed impact reporting as part of business as usual for organisations, so that impact data is used for decision making. As such, Laura oversees service delivery, ensures the core values are at the heart of how the company operates and contributes to the impact agenda though co-writing papers and speaking at conferences with university colleagues and funding bodies. For example, publishing the HEFCE commissioned Impact Guidance Report, speaking at the Impact of Science Conference in Amsterdam and at the INORMS conference in Melbourne.

Duanhong Zhang

Duanhong Zhang is the Assistant Director of Planning and Institutional Research Center, and also an Assistant Professor of Higher Education at Tongji University. His main research area includes Institutional Research, Higher Education Policy, Research Evaluation and Chinese Higher Education.

He is also the Executive Director of the Research Intelligence Unit, the 1st Chinese nongovernmental Think tank in education and science policy area. He has published more than 40 papers in the Journals and Newspapers. He is now leading more than 10 research programs from the national and local government. He has been nominated as the Higher Education Planning Forum in Asia (HEPA) Organizing Committee member recently.

Xiong Hongru

Dr. Xiong Hongru is currently Associate Research Fellow, in Department of Innovation Research, Development Research Center (DRC) of State Council in China.

His research interests cover innovation policy and institution, industrial and regional development, innovation and entrepreneurship. He has participated in more 20 policy research and evaluation projects assigned by the Central Government and some state ministries, like MOST, MIIT, MOE. He is also leading or participating as core member in several academic studies sponsored by NSF and NSSF. Besides writing internal working papers for government decision-making, he also has published more 30 research papers in core journals, major newspapers and magazines. He won several research awards in recent years, mainly include: the 1st prize of China Development Research (2017), Yearly Excellent Research Paper Prize by DRC (2015, 2017).

He holds Ph.D.’s and Master’s degree in School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University (2012), and Bachelor’s degree from Tongji University (2007). From 2009 to 2010, he was elected as a Visiting Research Fellow and Joint PhD in Dept. of International Development at University of Oxford, UK.

Woei Fuh Wong

Woei Fuh Wong has gone through a career transformation from a researcher to an engineer and later, an information specialist over a period of three decades. During his 10 years with Web of Science (in Thomson Reuters) since 2004, he actively engaged with researchers and academians in Asia Pacific region on bibliometric insights and research assessment.

In 2015, Woei Fuh started a consulting firm based in Singapore and he founded a research program, Research 123, helping younger researchers with research skill sets. Since then, he is a strong advocate of research best practices ranging from authoring, publishing and outreaching.

His consultancy work focuses on research communication and he delivered numerous workshops to university researchers about: research impact, research story telling, and research clustering & collaboration.

In his recent consulting work, he helped local journal publishers in improving their visibility through research outreaching program for their research authors. He holds a Ph.D. in Polymer Science & Technology from the University of Manchester, UK, and a MBA from Louisville University, USA. He is also a Crossref Ambassador, promoting the best practices of scholarly communication for research.

Rain Li

Mr. Qingyun Li received the B.Sc. and M.Sc degree in 2003 and 2006 from Northeastern University, Shenyang, and P.R. China.

He is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

He is also currently working as Institutional Research Analyst in The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

His research interest focuses on pattern recognition, sequential pattern mining, context mining, strategic planning, institutional research.

LIM Chiang Wee

Lim Chiang Wee is currently Deputy Director of Student and Academic Planning in the Student and Academic Services Department, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is responsible for strategic planning, policy development and academic planning with focus on undergraduate education.

Prior to joining NTU, he worked in the government sector handling policy review and formulation and had a short stint in the banking industry. Chiang Wee holds a Bachelor of Business degree from Nanyang Technological University and a Master of Science in Philosophy and Public Policy from London School of Economics and Political Science.

Fon Sim ONG

Fon Sim, Ong is a Professor of Marketing and Vice-Provost for Teaching and Learning at University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) and also Chair for the Centre for Academic Partnerships and Engagement (CAPE), a centre that is established to manage all award bearing off-campus teaching partnerships and collaborations for Nottingham Malaysia. As Vice-Provost for teaching and learning, she leads the development and delivery of the University’s teaching and learning strategy, ensuring that all programmes of UNM meet the Qualification Agencies requirements, relevant to educational needs, and ensure student experience and satisfaction within HE sector in Malaysia and beyond. As Chair of CAPE, she plays a strategic role in Nottingham’s presence locally and regionally through teaching partnerships and collaborations.

Before becoming the Vice-Provost, she was the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, UNM.

Prior to joining UNM, Fon Sim has held various positions at both private and public (Faculty of Business and Accountancy, University of Malaya) universities in Malaysia.

Nor Aishah HAMZAH

Aishah has served as Director of Global Planning and Strategy Centre (GPSC) at the University of Malaya since 2018. Prior to this, she has served as the Deputy Director of GPSC from 2013-2017 and at the Faculty of Science as the Deputy Dean (Academic) from 2006 – 2009 and Head of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences from 2000 – 2004.

She received her B.Sc. from Southampton University, M.Sc. from Leeds University and a Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom. Her current research interests are in data analytics and statistical modelling.

BU Guwuck

Dr (JD). Guwuck Bu is a renowned lawyer and served as a judge at the Korean national and regional courts for about two decades before being appointed the president at Y'sU (Youngsan University). He is the former chair of the Korean council for university education (KCUE), a national association of Korean universities, and also served as the chair of the Korean association of private university presidents.

He received his B.A. & M.A(J.D) in law from Seoul National University in the area of civil law in 1974 and 1979, respectively. He received an honorary doctoral degree in law (L.L.D) from Hanyang University in 2001.

Hatsuko YOSHIKUBO

Hatsuko YOSHIKUBO is an associate professor and experienced university educator. She had mainly devised and promoted countermeasures for student's English skills, such as TOEIC, at Shibaura Institute of Technology. She had also taken charge of supervision of overseas programms in short-term English training programs.

Soichiro Aihara

Soichiro Aihara is currently Professor at Center for Educational Innovation, Shibaura Institute of Technology, and Doctor Course Student at Graduate School of Integrated Frontier Sciences, Kyushu University. He is responsible for IR (Institutional Research), self-studies for accreditation, and serve as many committee member.

In order to strategic planning and quality assurance, he is now committing to construction information system for evidence-based decision making. His research interest is in higher education studies especially from social perspectives.

He was Research Associate at Research Institute for Higher Education, Hiroshima University (1989-1994) and engaged a lot of research projects including the 1992 Carnegie International Faculty Survey. He was tenured faculty at Osaka Kun-ei Women's College (1995-2013), Research Fellow at Aichi University of Education (2013-2015). During that period, he was co-researcher to develop standard student survey named JCIRP (Japan Cooperative Institutional Research Program) and engaged a lot of longitudinal student survey.

He published books and more than 50 papers those are topics such as student survey, faculty salary, and tuition policy.

Anson WUN

Mr. Anson Wun is Manager (Institutional Intelligence) of the Institutional Research and Planning Office (IRPO) at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Backed with an extensive background in IT and business process engineering in the education sector, his main role at IRPO is to drive the use of analytics and agile reporting on institutional data.

He has embarked on several University-wide initiatives such as the balanced scorecard, research metrics analytics, scholars profiling, and institutional intelligence for senior management and strategic planning. He is also responsible for formulating bibliometric analytics for the University in the upcoming Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in Hong Kong.

Anson has a Master of Statistics from The University of Hong Kong, and an MBA with a specialization in MIS from the Simon Fraser University, Canada. He also has a BSc in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of British Columbia, Canada.

Mushtak AL-ATABI

Professor Mushtak Al-Atabi is currently the Provost and CEO at Heriot-Watt University, Malaysia.

His research interests include thermofluids, renewable energy, biomechanical engineering, engineering education and academic leadership.

He is an Honorary Chair at the School of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Birmingham (UK) and the Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Engineering Science & Technology.

Professor Al-Atabi published three books, “Shoot the Boss,” “Think Like an Engineer” and “Driving Performance” and he has numerous research publications, awards and honours.

He is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (FIMechE) and a member of the Global Engineering Deans Council.

Professor Al-Atabi is an innovative educator, he pioneered the CDIO (Conceive, Design, Implement, Operate) and delivered the first MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) in Malaysia.

Under his leadership, Taylor’s School of Engineering became the first non US school to have a Grand Challenges Scholar Programme aimed at developing graduates able to address the 14 Grand Challenges for engineers in the 21st Century. He trains executives from Multinational Corporations including banks and energy companies.

Kenneth SIM

Ken is currently based in Hong Kong, and works as a consultant with Times Higher Education (THE) where he advises universities on performance benchmarking and other areas, leveraging proprietary data owned by THE.

Prior to this, he spent over 15 years in the Singapore Public Service, where he was in leadership positions across different government agencies. These include the Singapore Ministry of Education, where he was in charge of formulating policies on university governance and funding, as well as developing policies and programmes on continuing education. Ken obtained his Bachelor’s degree from Columbia University.

KOH Hian Chye

Dr Koh Hian Chye is currently a Professor at the Singapore University of Social Sciences. He serves concurrently as Director of Business Intelligence & Analytics, which is responsible for the implementation of learning analytics in the University, among other things.

He has more than thirty years of experience in data analysis and data mining, having served as a statistical/data mining consultant to SMEs, statutory boards, government agencies and large organisations. He has published in international journals and presented at international conferences in various areas in analytics. His main research and teaching interests are in data mining applications in business, healthcare and education.

Joy LIN

Dr. Joy Chia-Yi Lin is currently working as a project manager for Higher Education Sprout Program at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) in Taiwan. Dr. Lin has over 7 years of experience in managing national-scale elite project. She is responsible for total project management, also she is the key coordinator of NCKU 2018-2023 strategic planning working group. She has participated in planning and initiating several projects to boost university advancement and development.

She received a B.S. from Chung Yuan Christian University in Taiwan. Dr. Lin completed her M.S. in Teaching English as Second Language (TESOL) at St. John’s University in the United States. She continued her study at St. John’s University and received her Ed.D in Instructional Leadership. She also received certificate in Institutional Research in Pennsylvania State University.

Tsoi Mun Heng

Mr Tsoi Mun Heng is the Vice President for Planning at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). His responsibilities include strategic planning, enterprise risk management, organisational excellence and safety and health. He is also involved in the planning for campus development. Prior to this, he was the Senior Director for Academic Analysis and Planning, covering the planning and coordinating new academic programmes and resources, and managing performance, risk and quality in the Academic Group of SIT.

From 2011 to 2013, he was the Director of the Energy and Environment Research Directorate at the National Research Foundation Singapore, developing and implementing R&D programmes and innovative solutions to meet the challenge of achieving energy resilience and sustainable growth for Singapore.

He holds a Master of Science in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University and a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the National University of Singapore.

Phua Kia Kien

Dr. Phua Kia Kien obtained his Ph.D in Medical Immunology from the University of Liverpool in 1985. He is currently a Professor at the Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine (INFORMM). His main research interests are in the areas of immunology, microbiology, biotechnology, information & communication technology, and medical education. Professor Phua has won many awards amongst which include the Young Scientist of the Nation Award (Medical Category) Government of Malaysia, Quality and innovation awards at University, State and National levels, excellence service awards, and patent for development of laboratory diagnostics for typhoid and non-typhoid diseases.

Professor Phua has severed as Deputy Director INFORMM, Director for USM Industry Engagement, and Director for USM Institutional Development where he oversees the university’s institutional data collection, analysis, reporting and ranking. He is the key developer of the University’s Key Performance Indicator Management System (KPI-MS), which has been in operation since 2008. KPI-MS rates and monitors the research performance of all Schools in USM using a 6-Star excellence rating system.

Dr. Phua is also the developer of the Ministry of Higher Education’s e-MYRA (Malaysia Research Assessment) system, which enables all universities in Malaysia to analyse their research, development and commercialization achievements based on a comprehensive academic performance matrix. Amongst its objectives are to elevate the standing of Public Universities in the country to attain world-class status and to create differentiated higher education scenarios to meet the socio-economic aspirations of the country, while being cognizant of the limited resources available to pursue such goals.
