(Translated title and summary)

In order to specifically show the characteristics of the community, the Historic East Identity Corridor has launched six brand-new public space installations, including the Nonya Kueh pavilion, the lunch box space, the image of the Ruqi dock, the three-dimensional exhibition pavilion, the storehouse blueprint murals and brick benches.

Among them, the “Nonya Kueh Pavilion” consists of three small pavilions, and the shape is inspired by traditional Nonya pastries such as pressed Pulut Tekan, Kueh Lapis and Kueh Talam, and is built with common local building materials such as ventilation bricks, stained glass tiles and recycled drainage lattices.

Tan Jia Yue, a Master of Architecture student at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), conceptualised these installations with his team. In an interview, Jia Yue mentioned that Katong’s rich pastry heritage inspired their design, particularly Nonya Kueh. The vibrant colours and intricate details of these traditional pastries influenced their design, incorporating elements from local brands like Chin Mei Chin. By transforming these familiar treats into larger-than-life pavilions, the team created a playful and relatable experience.
