While studying at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) in 2015, Ms Siti Nurhayati Rahim faced a lack of halal food options on campus.
“At that time, there was a famous sandwich brand that was not halal. So my brother and I thought, if no one is offering it, why don’t we do it?” explained Ms Nurhayati, 30, who was excited to fill the need.
The experience sparked the idea for her and her brother, Mr. Muhammad Izhaq Rahim, 34, to open GomGom, a sandwich and salad stall designed specifically for university students.
According to Ms Nurhayati, a 2018 SUTD Engineering graduate, the response at the time was very encouraging.
“Students accept GomGom not only because it is easy to enjoy but also because of its taste and affordable price,” he added.
Now, almost a decade later, the sibling duo has launched Snappy Bowls at Singapore Management University (SMU).
“Snappy Bowls reflect a meal that is quick to prepare with a variety of options to choose from. That’s why we named it ‘Snappy’,” explained Ms Nurhayati.
“I want to offer healthy food at affordable prices that is easy for students to enjoy,” she said.
Prices at Snappy Bowls range from $6.50 to $9.50, with a special 10 percent discount for SMU students and staff.
The siblings also tried to open a branch in the City Centre Area (CBD) after the pandemic.
However, they are now focussing on the concept of food on campus.
“School is where we started and this is where we feel we can have the biggest impact.
“The prices are also more suitable for students and we are less comfortable charging prices that are too high while doing business in a location like the CBD,” she added.
Now, their dream is to expand their presence to every higher education institution in Singapore.
“We want students to get healthy and affordable halal food,” she explained.
