Two female teachers from China have been awarded the inaugural Master’s scholarship from the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) Eco-City Research and Innovation Centre (SERIC), and will be coming to Singapore next January for further studies.

This scholarship is jointly launched by SERIC and the China-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City Education and Sports Bureau to support eligible teachers or education administrators from public schools within the Eco-City to pursue advanced studies at SUTD.

SERIC, established in the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City in September last year, collaborates with the Eco-City authorities to promote sustainable urban development solutions to support of the Eco-City’s green future vision.

In response to media queries on Monday (25 August), SUTD said that two 24-year-old teachers, Jia Xinmeng and Wang Huilin, are from public schools in the Eco-City. Half of their Master’s degree tuition fees will be covered by scholarship, and their degrees were also eligible for certification by the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange. After completing their studies, they will be required to return to their original schools to serve for at least three years.

Last Friday (22 August), Jia Xinmeng and Wang Huilin, as well as Zeng Shaohuan (18 years old), a student from Beijing Normal University Tianjin Eco-City Affiliated School and recipient of the SERIC undergraduate scholarship, attended the scholarship award ceremony together.

Undergraduate scholarship to nurture global-minded innovators

The undergraduate scholarship was established in 2024, and covers half of the tuition fee. It aims to identify and nurture innovative talents with an international perspective, providing talent support for the Eco-City.

Zeng Shaohuan is the second recipient of the undergraduate scholarship. The first recipient has already completed one year of study at SUTD. Undergraduate scholarship recipients are required to return to the Eco-City after graduation to find employment or start a business, or contribute to the development of the Eco-City during their studies.

The Eco-City is a bilateral flagship project between the governments of China and Singapore. It is located in the Tianjin Binhai New Area, approximately 45 kilometers from the center of Tianjin.

The main developer of the Eco-City is Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City Investment and Development Co., Ltd., which was established in July 2009. It is a joint venture between a Chinese consortium led by Tianjin City Infrastructure Construction Investment Group Co., Ltd. and a Singaporean consortium led by Keppel Corporation, with each party holding a 50% stake.
