PhD Student

Biography

Kateryna is a Ph.D. researcher at ASD faculty at SUTD with the background in urban planning, urban design, computational design, teaching and moderation. She took part in several international urban design competitions including the competition for the new capital city of Indonesia. She received a dual Master degree in Urban Planning from Bauhaus University, Weimar and Tongji University, Shanghai with the best graduate award of her course of studies in Bauhaus.

Before starting Ph.D. position at SUTD she held a research position at Future Cities Laboratory, Singapore-ETH Centre, working on developing a parametric design framework as a platform for inclusive and transparent urban planning processes. She also supported the teaching of the course on advanced methods in urban design as a part of the instructors’ team.

Research Statement

Despite urban planning is an extremely complex and integrative discipline, the major involved fields of expertise are included in the process in the specific order and have standalone frameworks that are rarely interconnected. Evaluation of the design proposal is being done within the expert frameworks as well, which is making the useful findings mutually uninterpretable and leaving meaningful interdisciplinary conclusions overlooked.

Under the topic “Interdisciplinary collaboration support for urban design projects” the research aims to introduce a mixed organizational and technological framework to reinforce efficient interdisciplinary collaboration and bring more expert control to the design process. The research is based on the assumption that except for the extremely diverse nature of the urban design practices there are specific patterns of the design steps and decisions maintained in most of the projects.
