Message from Programme Director

Welcome to SUTD’s Master of Engineering in Innovation by Design.

In an era defined by unprecedented technological advances from artificial intelligence to robotics, the practice of design is more important than ever.

Design provides the vision and foresight to create the best solutions, not only the most efficient ones. Design forces us to question the problem and solve for root causes rather than symptoms. And design ensures that we build technology for the real world, as designer Victor Papanek once said: a world of diverse users, social conflicts, environmental crises and economic constraints.

In the MEng Innovation by Design (MIbD) programme, you will combine advanced training in design thinking and human-centred design with the ability to pursue your own research interests in a year-long thesis supervised by faculty from across the whole of SUTD—including engineering, arts, architecture and computer science. You will combine deep knowledge of technical fields with real-world applications and learn how to collaborate with AI as a partner in the design process. In this unique training that combines technical skills and human insight, you will do more than innovate new things. You will help create a better world by design.

I welcome you to join us as we design for a better world.
