Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD)
Master of Science in Technology and Design (Sustainable Product Design)
About programme
The Master of Science in Technology and Design (Sustainable Product Design) is a comprehensive, practice-oriented programme that integrates design thinking, engineering, material behaviour, and manufacturing within a sustainability-driven framework.
Students develop strong technical and digital competencies, with an emphasis on reducing environmental impact and supporting circular economy practices, through topics such as Digital Manufacturing and Product Representation, Manufacturing and Assembly.
One-year full-time programme
The one-year programme culminates in a 2-term Design Project, where students apply their accumulated knowledge to a real-world, sustainability-focused design challenge, progressing from discovery and ideation to prototyping and realisation.
Graduates emerge with the knowledge and skills to lead sustainable product innovation and create solutions that are economically viable, environmentally responsible and socially impactful.
Message from the academic programme director
Many people interested in sustainability will know that about 80% of a product’s environmental impact is defined at the design stage. The Master of Science in Technology and Design (Sustainable Product Design) addresses this challenge directly.
Students will understand the impact of design decisions on the environmental footprint of products. Through design principles and basic concepts in materials and manufacturing, we guide students through the decision processes that impact our environment and analyse various strategies to mitigate such impacts.
This is a hands-on course series linking product requirements, materials behaviour and manufacturing processes through specialised software. Core topics include Design for the Environment, Product Architecture and Materials Selection, culminating in a 2-term Design Project focused on sustainability.
Study with us to build practical, industry-relevant skills in sustainable design, materials and manufacturing, and open up pathways into innovation and product development roles in emerging industries.
Be the design engineer with a heart for our environment.
