If I enrol in PhDⒾ by Innovation, can I later switch to the standard PhD track (or vice versa)?

Yes. Transfers between the PhD and PhDⒾ by Innovation pathways may be considered on a case-by-case basis, subject to academic approval. Students are encouraged to discuss your plans with your advisor and PhD admissions team as early as possible. Transfer requests are assessed based on candidature progress, completed milestones, supervisory support, programme requirements, and, where applicable, the suitability of the innovation mission and industry adopter arrangements.

Are scholarships available and what are the fees for full-time and part-time?

Enrolled students, including international and mature candidates, may be eligible for SUTD PhD scholarships and other eligible funding framework. Please revisit our tuition fee page in June 2027 for the latest tuition fee information. For further enquiries, please contact us at phd@sutd.edu.sg

Is funding available for overseas research?

Overseas fieldwork funding may be available, subject to supervisor endorsement, funding eligibility, and official University approval.

Do I need to secure my own industry partner for the innovation project?

Yes, you are expected to identify and secure a suitable industry partner or adopter* for your innovation project. However, you are not required to have an industry partner secured at the application stage.

* An Industry Partner or Adopter is an external organisation or stakeholder that validates the practical value of a candidate’s innovation by piloting, deploying, using, endorsing, or supporting its continued development in a real-world environment.

Can an employer serve as the industry partner?

Yes, an employer can fulfil this role if they provide operational access, data, feedback, and innovation validation.

How is IP handled?

Intellectual property and confidentiality remain governed by the agreements between the candidate, their employer, industry adopter and SUTD, where applicable.
