Current and Future Needs: Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Better Applications

Harnessing our unique multi-disciplinary capabilities, SUTD has designed a new world-first degree programme aimed at producing a new generation of designers and innovators for an artificial intelligence-driven economy.
This degree programme will focus on the application of AI-driven design across products, systems, services and the built environment, by encompassing technology, human and business with 3Ds (i.e. Design, Digital, Data).
Graduates from this programme will be awarded a Bachelor of Science in Design and Artificial Intelligence, and will be able to

  • boost productivity in vertical thrusts through AI-driven design innovation
  • create economic value through sustainable applications
  • increase AI deployment effectively
  • disrupt economies via design theories and practices

Unique Features of the Programme

Unlike most computer science-focused programmes which are targeting “better AI”, this programme focuses on “better design” using AI, with an emphasis on application-based courses and design studios. By graduation, students would have a comprehensive portfolio of industry inspired projects to show to prospective hiring companies.

  • Compulsory application-based AI-related core courses and design-focused core courses in Terms 4 and 5
  • Integrated AI Design Innovation studio allowing students to make connections between AI and design thinking methodologies
  • Business-related courses to understand the importance of value creation, with a compulsory Design Entrepreneurship course in Term 5
  • Combination with Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) to understand ethics and social responsibility
  • Design studios in Terms 5 to 8 to equip students with diverse exposure to the industry sectors, working on real-world data via company-sponsored projects
  • Design studio that vertically integrates junior and senior year students within project themes; providing managerial and leadership experience for senior year students
  • Depending on the chosen electives / tracks, students may have a varying concentration in Design / AI / Business

Programme Curriculum

Depending on the chosen electives, the composition could vary, for example
• AI component from 16-28%, or
• Design component from 22-34% or
• Business component from 2% to 14%

Endorsement from Industry

“The programme will equip the students in design discipline with the much needed complementary AI skills for them to differentiate themselves further.”
Dr Terence Hung
Chief of Future Intelligence Technologies, Rolls Royce

AI is a new area. Designing AI into a traditional engineering system is often an afterthought. An AI-capable system should incorporate AI into its design at the onset. It will benefit the industry if AI & DI can be fused seamlessly into all AI product designs.”
Dr Peh Chin Hwee
Vice President, Head of Intelligent Systems (Robotics & Autonomous, Systems), ST Engineering

“The DAI looks to me an excellent program to generate the future AI talent for business and consultancy.”
Mr Hong Cao
Head of Data Science, Ernst & Young LLP

“SUTD's AI degree is relevant in building a pipeline of multi-disciplinary data scientists and AI engineers.”

Mr Johnson Poh
Executive Director & Head Enterprise AI,
UOB Group, UOB

Interested students are to make their selection for this programme only after the end of Term 3.
