This advanced professional programme builds upon the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) Singapore and Urban Redevelopment Authority Conservation Technical Handbook series, which aims to promote high-quality restoration practice, strengthen technical competency within the heritage building sector, and enhance appreciation of Singapore’s built heritage.

Focusing specifically on historic reinforced concrete structures, the course equips participants with the knowledge and analytical skills required to assess existing conditions, diagnose deterioration mechanisms, and develop appropriate conservation and intervention strategies. Participants will examine the historical development of reinforced concrete in Singapore, material behaviour and durability, structural assessment methodologies, non-destructive testing approaches, and international conservation principles governing intervention.

Through case studies, technical discussions, and applied exercises, participants will learn to integrate heritage value, structural performance, regulatory requirements, and sustainability considerations in making informed conservation decisions.

Who should attend 

This course is designed for practising professionals in the built environment sector with a minimum of two years of relevant industry experience. Suitable participants include architects, structural engineers, conservation consultants, project managers, heritage officers, and technical officers involved in the assessment, design, management, or regulation of historic buildings.

Applicants should possess prior foundational knowledge of building construction and materials. Participants are expected to have professional exposure to conservation, restoration, rehabilitation, or upgrading projects involving existing structures.

Prerequisites

Applicants must have completed the introductory course “Architectural Conservation Studies” or demonstrate equivalent foundational knowledge in architectural conservation principles.
