One in four SUTD faculty ranked among top 2% of world’s best scientists for 2024
One in four of SUTD’s faculty members has been ranked among the top 2 per cent of the most-cited scientists in the world for 2024.
In the latest “World’s Top 2%” scientists list released by Stanford University in September 2025, 21 SUTD faculty were listed across fields including artificial intelligence & image processing, networking & telecommunications, optics and applied physics.
The prestigious list is based on the bibliometric information in the Scopus database1 and includes more than 210,000 researchers from across the globe, classified into 22 scientific fields and 174 subfields. Selection is based on the top 100,000 scientists by c-score (with and without self-citations) or a percentile rank of 2% or above in the sub-field.
SUTD President Professor Phoon Kok Kwang was ranked within the top 0.1% of his subject field, geological & geomatics engineering. A world leader in the development of statistical and machine learning methods for geotechnical engineering, Prof Phoon was bestowed the ASCE Norman Medal twice in 2005 and 2020, the Humboldt Research Award in 2017, the Harry Poulos Award in 2023, and the Alfredo Ang Award in 2024 among other accolades. Most recently, he was appointed Deputy Executive Chairman of AI Singapore for two years starting from 1 August 2025.
