Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP)

Research is integral to education at SUTD. The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP) helps to foster a spirit of learning and inquiry among our undergraduates, by engaging faculty and students on cutting edge and innovative research projects.

Please note that students do not receive any monetary or in kind compensation under UROP or iUROP.

Project proposals
Faculty-led projects

Faculty interested in offering projects for UROP or iUROP are welcomed to submit their proposals online via SAMS UROP Portal during the call for UROP proposals period (refer to schedule).

 

For outbound iUROP, please indicate in the title “(Outbound) <Project Title>” and specify the period of overseas research attachment in the proposal.

 

Project extensions
The maximum duration of a UROP project is 2 terms. To request for extensions, please write to us at urop@sutd.edu.sg.

Student-initiated projects

Faculty may be approached by students to be the project supervisor for their self-initiated UROP projects. If faculty is willing to take the student(s) under his/her guidance, he/she will submit the proposal during the call for UROP proposals period (refer to schedule).

Funding

Successful UROP proposals will be supported with a S$1,500 funding for materials and consumables according to the UROP Funding Guidelines

Student evaluation

Towards the end of the UROP project, faculty will be asked to evaluate the student’s performance. If the work done by the student is satisfactory, faculty can recommend him/her for a UROP certificate.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I am accepted into UROP?
Students will receive an email one week before new term starts. Otherwise, drop us an email at urop@sutd.edu.sg. 

I am working on a project but cannot complete within 1 term. What should I do?
You will have to discuss with your supervisor who will then submit a request for project extension to the UROP office. Please note that the maximum duration allowed for a UROP project is 2 terms.

How do I know if I am eligible for a UROP certificate?
At the end of your UROP, you will be evaluated by your project supervisor. If your work is deemed satisfactory, your supervisor will recommend you for a UROP certificate. You will be notified to collect your certificate when it is ready. Participation will also be recorded in your Fifth Row transcript.

Where can students view the list of projects available?

Projects are available online via MyPortal during the student application period (refer to schedule)


Can students participate in the UROP more than once?
Yes you can. However, priority will be given to first-time UROPers.
