Programme outline
The course looks deep into the selection of materials and manufacturing processes, their close relation to material properties and product aesthetics and perceptions. The sustainability of different combinations of materials and processes will be investigated and quantified from an economic, environmental, and performance standpoint in different industries.
Learning objectives
- Be familiar with the most common physical, electrical, mechanical and environmental properties of common materials
- Be able to select the right material for the right application, given functional requirements
- Have a general understanding of the different manufacturing processes and technologies
- Understand the advantages and limitations of manufacturing processes, and how they affect material and product properties
- Be able to adapt the design of products to suit the materials and their manufacturing processes, and vice-versa
- Be able to use a material selection software proficiently
Topics
- What Influences Product Design? Designing with Materials in Mind
- Overview of Material Properties
- Multi-dimensional Material Selection
- Form Follows Material
- The Environmental Impact of Materials
- Multi-dimensional Process Selection
- Eco-audits of Products
- Historical Perspective of Materials Consumption
- Materials and Sustainable Development with Case Studies
Assessment
Participants will be assessed through regular quizzes and the use of hands-on simulation software to demonstrate your understanding and application of course concepts. Participants will deliver a pitch (project presentation) to showcase your technical competency and ability to communicate ideas effectively and persuasively. There is no written examination.
