Intro to Singapore's Architecture and Sketching - Women x Tech & Design

03 Feb 2023 2.30PM to 5.00PM SUTD (in-person session)

Brought to you by the SUTD - Women x Tech & Design series

Here’s your chance to learn about Singapore's Architecture and sketching at our campus. What's more - you have an exclusive opportunity to step into the centuries-old traditional Chinese antique houses donated by movie star Jackie Chan, and also stand a chance to win Grab Food vouchers! At the same time, get to hear and interact with our female students and find out how 40% of SUTD students are promising women visionaries who wield the power to better the world.

What to Expect

Learn about Singapore’s vibrant and beautiful early modern architectural masterpieces, and bring streamlined design to life through a guided sketching workshop by our faculty and students from our Architecture and Sustainable Design (ASD) pillar!

This 2.5-hour in-person workshop will take you through Singapore’s rich art deco-styled architectural past with links to present conserved buildings, such as those found in Tiong Bahru.

Participants will try their hand at basic hand-sketching as a primary means that aspiring designers use to visually brainstorm basic design ideas and forms.

The workshop will take place at our campus and traditional Chinese antique houses.

About the Instructor

Daniel Joseph Whittaker

Senior Lecturer,
Exchange, Collaborations, Guest Lectures and Exhibitions Coordinator, ASD

Daniel Whittaker is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture and Sustainable Design at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). Prior to teaching at SUTD, he was Owner’s Representative for the pre-planning, design, construction and staging of a new private museum in Chicago, Illinois called Wrightwood 659. Designed by Tadao Ando Architect and Associates of Osaka, Japan; the creation of a contemporary art and social activist space was precisely fit within an existing 1930s-era Chicago common brick masonry shell, requiring extensive project planning and coordination. Whittaker was co-curator of the gallery’s inaugural exhibition titled: “Masters of Architecture,” which explored architectural conversations between Le Corbusier’s oeuvre of béton brut creations and three of Tadao Ando’s American museums, through an archival lens.
