Enhanced Scholarships for Singapore University of Technology and Design Students

04 Oct 2012

The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) has enhanced its scholarship scheme to attract more Singapore students with outstanding academic qualifications and the passion for technology and design. The enhanced bond-free scholarships will not only fund students’ tuition fees, but also their overseas exchange programmes with living allowance covered, or internship programmes, and provide opportunities to do research work with their counterparts in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Zhejiang University (ZJU).

For the 2013 student intake onwards, applications are open from October 1, 2012 for one of the following five scholarship schemes offered by SUTD (see appendix for details):

  1. SUTD-MIT Global Leadership Programme Scholarship*
  2. SUTD-ZJU Asian Leadership Programme Scholarship*
  3. SUTD Undergraduate Distinguished Scholarship
  4. SUTD Undergraduate Merit Scholarship
  5. SUTD Undergraduate Scholarship

*Existing students are already in the process of applying for this exchange programme.

SUTD Provost Professor Chong Tow Chong said: “We hope our enhanced scholarships, which provide a more comprehensive package, will help level the playing field in attracting high calibre students to SUTD who aim to better the world through technology and design.”

With the opening of the portal on October 1, 2012, applicants will be assessed on their suitability for the 100 places which are available for all five scholarships. The SUTD scholarship selection committee will decide on the type of scholarship awarded to the student after a holistic evaluation that not only take students’ grades and co-curricular activities into account, but also their interests, leadership qualities, passion in technology and design, etc. During application, potential scholars can also indicate their interests in the scholarship they would like to be awarded.

With the change, the 72 current scholars who have already been awarded scholarships from SUTD, equivalent to the SUTD Undergraduate Merit Scholarship, will be eligible to apply for the scholarship which offers better benefits, such as the SUTD Undergraduate Distinguished Scholarship.

For non-Singaporeans, there are currently more than 10 different industry-supported scholarships offered at SUTD, for e.g. Dr Goh Keng Swee Scholarship, Far East Organization Scholarship, Keppel Group Scholarship and ASEAN Undergraduate Scholarships.

SUTD’s tuition fees for the first intake is S$11,000 per academic year (consisting of two terms) for Singapore citizens, S$13,200 per academic year for Singapore permanent residents and S$17,800 per academic year for international students.
