Subject Description:

This course focuses on the fundamental principles of cellular biology and genetics. Major topics covered by this course includes cell signaling, cell cycle, cell cycle regulation, sexual reproduction, genetic analysis in Drosophila, human genetics, and cancer. During the course, we focus on the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that influence the normal functioning of biological systems at different levels of organization. We will examine how current technology has driven scientific investigation and the advancement of our understanding of biological systems. Throughout the course emphasis will be placed on scientific methodologies, experimental design, problem-solving, and data analysis, through which quantitative nature of biological research will be highlighted.

  • Describe the key concepts in cellular biology and genetics.
  • Apply these fundamental concepts to explain the function and regulation of living systems.
  • Describe common laboratory techniques and methods of data analysis used in cellular biology and genetic research.
