Prospective university students' demand for information technology- related (IT) courses are still strong. Universities have generally reported that there are more applications for such courses than in previous years.
Local university admission applications closed last month and applicants can apply to several institutions at the same time.
Lim Su Fang, Singapore University of Technology and Design’s (SUTD) director of admissions, pointed out that students keen to take up the information systems technology and design pillar have increased by about 12% this year.
In addition, interest in the newly launched SUTD Honours and Research Programme (SHARP) was also high. The course offers 20 places and received more than 200 applications.
According to the graduate employment survey jointly published by local universities this year, graduates from digital and information technology-related programmes have the highest salaries, with a median starting salary of $4,100.
Noel Tan (21) will be entering university this new school year. After graduating from Meridian Junior College two years ago, he applied for courses at NUS, NTU and SMU. Despite having been accepted by these universities, he eventually enrolled in the SUTD Technology Entrepreneurship Programme (STEP). Graduates of this programme will receive a Bachelor of Engineering degree and a Master of Science in Technology Entrepreneurship.
Compared to more established universities, Noel believes that SUTD is able to provide students with more space to explore and practice ideas. “Through STEP, I can also go overseas for one year, spending half a year in the US, and another half a year in China. This is a valuable learning opportunity and one of the reasons why I enrolled.”
